Australian Bureau of Statistics shares key mental health issues and self-managed strategies.
According to the National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing released in July by the ABS, 4.2 million Australians experienced a 12-month mental disorder that significantly interfered with their cognitive, emotional and social abilities.
Anxiety was the most common group of mental disorders experienced by 3.3 million people aged between 16-85 years.
17.5% of Australians saw a health professional for their mental health, while 4.4% accessed other services via digital technology to improve their mental health.
The study also examined self-managed strategies and found that 3 in 5 people took action to help manage and support their mental health and wellbeing including:
- increasing level of exercise or physical activity
- practising positive thinking
- doing more things they enjoyed
- better organised
- sought support from family or friends
- relaxation techniques
- changed diet
Developing self-managed strategies to improve wellbeing not only safeguards against a mental illness it also supports recovery.
At Workplace Wellbeing our focus is on enabling employees to develop their own Wellbeing Action Plans (self-managed strategies).
We believe that a supportive workplace plays a critical role in helping to keep people feeling well. We design Wellbeing Programs to help organisations seamlessly integrate practical support into existing business activities. Three in five people are looking for self-managed strategies to support their mental health and wellbeing so connecting employees with the resources they're looking for will go a long way in creating an enviable culture where people feel valued, empowered and energised at work.
